Sitecore XM Cloud vs Traditional Sitecore Capabilities and Checkpoints Compared

Sitecore

If you have spent a lot of time working with Sitecore you probably know it well. You know what it is like to stay up late trying to fix problems with Sitecore. You know how to plan for updates and new versions. You also know how good it feels when everything goes right and a new version is deployed without any issues. The Content Editor in Sitecore is something you are used to. You have set up the Content Delivery and Content Management parts the way you want them.

When people talk about Sitecore XM Cloud you might feel an unsure. Is Sitecore XM Cloud better or is it just a new version of Sitecore? Do you really need to switch to Sitecore XM Cloud when the old way is working fine?

These are things you should think about. Let us think about them and be honest with ourselves, about Sitecore and Sitecore XM Cloud.

First, Let's Talk About What Traditional Sitecore Actually Is

Traditional Sitecore XP and Sitecore XM that you have on your premises is a big deal for people who want to make good digital experiences. Your team is in charge of all the behind the scenes stuff. You have to take care of the Content Delivery servers and the Content Management servers. You get to decide when you want to make updates and when you want to make changes and you must figure out how all the parts work together.

For a lot of teams being, in control of all this is important. If you have ever had to deal with a big Sitecore upgrade, you know that it is not all good. There is a lot of work that goes into keeping everything running smoothly. It can be really frustrating. Sometimes it feels like Sitecore is not working with the web technology but rather against it. You have to deal with Sitecore upgrades and Sitecore maintenance which can be a headache.

So, What Is Sitecore XM Cloud?

XM Cloud is Sitecores cloud-based content management system. It offers the core content management features of Sitecore as a managed service. This means no servers to maintain or infrastructure to manage. Sitecore takes care of upgrades, scaling and ensuring the system is always available.

The bigger change isn't, about where XM Cloud is hosted. XM Cloud is built using an architecture.

  • Your front end is separate and usually built using Next.js.
  • Content is delivered through Sitecore Experience Edge using GraphQL.

This approach requires a way of developing creating content and even thinking about your digital experience.

Capability Comparison: Where Things Actually Differ

Infrastructure & Hosting: In Sitecore your team takes care of CD and CM servers on their own computers or, on a cloud service of their choice. In XM Cloud all that work is handled automatically. Sitecore manages the environments for you. Many teams find this a huge relief. Some teams who want to control every detail of their infrastructure might feel like they are losing some control.

Content Authoring Experience: The classic Sitecore Experience Editor is still familiar to marketers out there, XM Cloud brings in Sitecore Pages, a way of creating content. It's more visual and easier to use for those who aren't tech experts. One thing to note is that it doesn't have all the features of the old Experience Editor. For many users Sitecore Pages and Sitecore Experience Editor are good enough. The old Experience Editor had some flexibility that is missing in Sitecore Pages. Still Sitecore Pages is an option, for many marketers. It helps them create content without needing to know much about coding. Sitecore Pages makes it easy to create and edit content. The Experience Editor and Sitecore Pages serve the purpose.

Personalisation & Analytics: Traditional Sitecore XP comes with built-in xDB for analytics, personalisation and customer profiling all tightly integrated. XM Cloud takes an approach, it is designed to work with Sitecore Personalize and Sitecore CDP as products. This approach gives you flexibility. However, you have to put your stack more carefully. You have to choose how you want to use Sitecore Personalize and Sitecore CDP with XM Cloud. This means you can use the products that best suit your needs.

Developer Experience: This is where XM Cloud really stands out. When developers work with XM Cloud, they get to use Next.js and React which are the tools they would use for any other modern web project. They do not have to deal with Sitecore rendering engines or complicated.NET dependencies on the front end. If your team is looking to hire developers now it is much easier to find people who know how to work with XM Cloud because it uses the same tools as other modern web projects. XM Cloud is a choice, for teams who want to make it easy for developers to get started.

Multisite Management: XM Cloud is really made for having sites at the same time. When you have brands or sites for different areas it is a lot easier to manage them from one place. This is a difference, from the old way of doing things with Sitecore, where having many sites was a lot of work and needed a lot of special setups. XM Cloud makes managing sites a lot simpler.

The Honest Checkpoints Before You Decide

This is the part that really counts. XM Cloud is really exciting. It is not the right choice for every team at every moment. Here are the things, about XM Cloud that're worth thinking about:

  • Does your team know Next.js and React? XM Cloud's front end is built on these. If your team is primarily .NET developers, there's a real skills investment required.
  • Do you rely heavily on xDB and built-in personalisation? You'll need to plan how that maps to Sitecore Personalize or CDP as separate composable products.
  • How customised is your current Sitecore instance? Years of having custom pipelines and integrations in place do not automatically mean they will work with something. The more custom your system is, the carefully you will need to assess custom pipelines and integrations.
  • Are you ready for a composable mindset? XM Cloud does content management exceptionally well, but you'll be composing your broader DXP from multiple best-of-breed tools. That's a different operating model.
  • What's your timeline and budget for change? Moving to XM Cloud is a job. It needs dedication. With help and the right partners, you can do it faster, but it still takes a lot of hard work.

The Bottom Line

XM Cloud and traditional Sitecore aren't simply "new vs old." Traditional Sitecore is still the option for teams that have made a lot of custom changes to their platform need specific infrastructure or are not ready to switch to a composable stack.

For teams that want to work find developers who are familiar with modern techniques cut down on extra work and use a platform that is always getting better XM Cloud is the way to go because that is where Sitecore is focusing its efforts.

The real question is not which one is better. The real question is which one is right for your team now and where you want your team to be in three years. If you think about these things carefully and honestly you will probably figure out the answer, to this question.
